A short story about how and why CoachVantage was born

Hi! My name is Glen Oliveiro, founder of CoachVantage and I’d like to tell you a story about why a 40-something professional (yes, that’s me!) with ambitions of becoming a successful SaaS entrepreneur, decided to embark on a mission to self-fund and develop a solution for coaches.
 
It all started with a phone call to an executive coach in response to a “Strange question?” email I sent her. As it turned out, that question – What is the biggest challenge you face as a coach? – was not so strange after all. Constance and I spoke on the phone for over an hour. She told me all about the pain points and challenges she faced as a coach.
 
As a coach, entrepreneur and small business owner, she has to multi-task effectively. Juggling between her love of coaching and helping others find clarity in their lives, she wears multiple hats. She has to organize her calendar, schedule coaching appointments, handle billing and invoicing, jot down and file session notes, manage her CRM database and remember to log her coaching sessions to get ICF-certified. On top of it all, she needs to be a marketing wizard, build her tribe and keep up with the social media buzz.
 
Sounds familiar?
 
The more coaches I spoke with, it became clearer to me that these challenges are not unique to Constance. I spoke with over 60 coaches and asked them detailed questions about how they manage their coaching practice so that I could better understand the challenges that coaches face.
 
I attended ICF meetings, met coaches and made friends along the way. After 6 months of research, I clearly understood the challenges of being a coach, entrepreneur and running a small business single-handedly.
 
Most coaches told me that they use a hodgepodge of software like Excel, Google Drive, Dropbox, TimeTrade, Acuity and various other software to help them manage different bits and pieces of their business. But there was a problem with this. It was not giving them a holistic solution. They had to switch between different applications to get what they needed.
 
End result?
 
They ended up wasting more time, feeling more disorganized and less productive. Whatever happened to coaching ‘like a boss’?
 
Other coaches who were more established in their business told me that they use a coaching platform that’s touted as being ‘everything for everyone’.  The problem, though, is that it took a long time to learn how to use the software and had many features that they didn’t need and didn’t use. “Clunky”, “cumbersome”, “complicated” and “expensive” were adjectives used to describe the platform.
 
But still, they stuck with using it because there just wasn’t any better alternative that met their needs and was easy to use.
 
So, after months of speaking with coaches and digging deep to understand their challenges, the table was turned on me. It was my turn to answer their hopeful question:
 
“Can you come up with a solution that will help me manage my coaching business easily, be user-friendly and affordable?”
 
Well, to cut a long story short (I promised this would be a short story!), after months of design, development, testing, more conversations with coaches and alot of fun…CoachVantage was born!
